Deutzia: plant and origins
With the nameDeutziaabout 60 different plant species are identified. These are flowering plants of the Hydrangeaceae family. ThereDeutziait is native to eastern and central Asia (from the Himalayas to Japan, to the Philippines), to Central America and also to Europe. Due to its versatility, some species are particularly hardy and thrive well in the home garden without the need for special care.
All species are shrubby, we sometimes hear ofdeutzia nanabecause there is no shortage of species that reach a maximum of 80 cm, however, most of the species have a height ranging from 1 to 4 meters. Many species are deciduous (they lose their leaves in winter) but there is no shortage of tropical speciessmpreverdito be grown in pots so as to be placed in a sheltered environment in winter. The most common species are: deutzia scabra, deutzia crenata, deutzia gracillis and deutzia rosae.
It is very rustic, resistant to cold and this makes it suitable for cultivation in the open ground even in central and northern Italy. It resists late frosts and has white flowers with a simple corolla. There is no shortage of hybrids with double corolla flowers on the market.
It is appreciated for its flower-laden racemes. The flowers have 2 cm corollas with long and narrow petals. The white flowers of Deutzia Crenata are very elegant and for this reason they are appreciated.
It is undoubtedly the most widespread, it has simple flowers with five petals. The flowers are pure white with yellow stamens. The plant has a smaller size and the flowers are appreciated because they are very fragrant. It has lanceolate, bright green leaves.
In reality it is not a species but a hybrid obtained from different crosses and selected for its double and pink flowers that bloom between May and June. Deutzia rosea is chosen for its abundant blooms and for its rustic nature (it is undemanding). It reaches a height of 150 cm and like the other specimens it wants a bright position.
How to grow Deutzia
The best time forplant deutziafalls in spring, in April. Planting must be carried out when the plants are about to start to vegetate, in this way they have the necessary energy to easily adapt to a new substrate.
How to plant deutzia? It can be planted isolated or by creating hedges. Choose a place that is very bright and sheltered from the currents (which will sweep away the flowers and prematurely end the blooms). Before planting, work the soil that must not be dry or arid. The soil, even if not very fertile, must be well drained because thedeutziahates waterlogging.
Who buys onedeutzia in vase, in order to plant it in the garden, it will first have to perform abundant irrigation in order to facilitate the detachment of the earthen bread from the walls of the pot.
Remove the soil attached to the roots and try to untangle the roots. Eliminate any dead roots. Thinning out the roots is important before each repotting and before planting any plant, deutzia including.
It will be necessary:
- Dig a hole as deep and wide as the earth loaf but at least 40 cm in diameter.
- On the bottom, arrange a layer of soil mixed with 50% organic fertilizer (we recommend pelleted manure).
- House the plant in the newly dug hole.
- Fill the spaces left in the hole with fresh soil being careful not to suffocate the collar.
- Press the soil well and irrigate to facilitate the taking root of the plant.
Unlike roses that need sparse but abundant watering, thedeutziethey require modest but frequent wetting. It will be necessary to irrigate without ever allowing the soil to dry out completely between one wetting and the next.
If at the time of planting you have not added manure to the bottom of the hole, since planting, it is advisable to administer a balanced gradual release fertilizer. The fertilizer must then be administered in the spring of each year, incorporated into the surface layers of the soil.
