Plants that resist the wind

Plants that resist the wind

Plants that resist the wind: from perennials, to evergreens, annuals and flowering plants to grow on the balcony or terrace where the wind blows strong.

Plants can be subject to gusts of wind, which could consequently ruin them irreversibly. If you live in a very windy area, you should never opt for plants that can't stand this atmospheric problem.

The strong gusts of wind over time, open real wounds on the trunks and branches, thus predisposing the plants to fungal diseases, or to lose their ornamental shape because they are bent to the will of this atmospheric agent.

This happens especially in woody plants, in fact, the continuous beating of the wind on their branches and on their trunk leads them to twist and seem unbalanced. Over time, this imbalance causes the plant to break apart. The breaking of a shrub can also lead to serious problems for the owner of the garden. First of all, there is a risk that it will ruin the layout of the house, and then unfortunately if you find yourself under a tree about to break you also risk creating damage to things and people, and animals.

The wind, therefore, more than frost and other atmospheric events, can be defined as a real enemy for most plants.

Which plants resist strong winds?

Plants that resist the wind, exist and can be used in all those green spaces or gardens that are often subject to gusts of wind, both in winter and in summer. Plants that can tolerate the wind are usually those that have low growth or ground cover, even rustic plants such as dwarf bulbs or shrubs that grow more in width rather than height. What specifically are the plants that resist the wind?

Cold-resistant shrubs and flowering plants

The shrubs that can withstand the wind and to bad weather are:

  • Cotoneaster (dwarf species)

In the next section we will see how to create a wind protection for garden plants.

Natural windproof barriers

The garden plants can be protected from the wind, thanks to always natural tricks that manage to deflect its persistence. Usually, many prefer to opt for fixed structures such as pergolas, gazebos, greenhouses and fences. However, these can still be damaged and over time can no longer adequately resist the attacks of the wind.

For protect your garden from the wind, therefore it is possible to use plants that are not only useful as protection, but that thanks to the wind favor the dispersion of seeds and pollen. Furthermore, the light passage of ventilation, through these plants, decreases stagnation and prevents the others from getting sick.

The most suitable way to hold plants sheltered from the wind, is to create a barrier to decrease the speed of the air and try to prevent eddies from forming inside the garden. To succeed in this attempt, you should first of all build windbreak barriers using a system of hedges and shrubs.

The natural barriers, as we have just mentioned, they are far better than those built by man. To create good barriers against the wind, however, it is necessary to opt for plants that can provide adequate support. Hedges are certainly the best solution, even if they require a lot of space and care. Their protective action and the wind resistance, allows it to be also one of the most popular solutions. Furthermore, in the event that very large spaces have to be protected, it would be better to choose instead rows of poplars planted at a regular distance from each other. The bamboo windbreaks are also excellent.
