Travel and cycling holidays what to bring: bike touring equipment 2020

The cycle tourism is experiencing a moment of great splendor in Italy and beyond: the re-evaluation of concepts such as slow tourism, the possibility of visiting smaller towns combined with the sense of adventure given by the variety of landscapes and the cultural and gastronomic liveliness make this type of one of a kind experience. Finally, there are many who argue that bicycle trips will be one of the favorite types of holidays in phase 2 in times of coronavirus: few gatherings and a lot of nature to enjoy after months of lockdown spent mostly at home.

By bicycle you can have extreme experiences such as a trip in the Andes or the coast to coast of the United States like Omar di Felice but also simply pedaling on the dirt road among the Tuscan vineyards during sunset; you can cycle in the wind along the sea or find yourself along an old rural railway or you can still face 20 km long Alpine passes with landscapes that you would never have dreamed of seeing. You can decide to stay away for several days in the historical routes of the Via Francigena or the sections of the Camino de Santiago, perhaps stopping with the tent; or more simply you can decide to do shorter but very intense itineraries from a naturalistic point of view.

Whatever the spring that pushes you to open your senses to beauty, always remember that a trip, however long or short, always starts with luggage. As in everyday life it is often said that to prepare your luggage for a cycling holiday "You have to take out everything you need and then leave half of it at home". You have to start light (especially with your head) but "Know which half to bring".

I therefore propose a list of what could be used on a bike trip. The secret, as we said before, is knowing what to bring to ensure that nothing or almost nothing remains unused but also to be able to cope with emergencies when these should happen.

Cycling what to bring with you: equipment, equipment and luggage

There is no famous "definitive" check list and much depends essentially on some factors that influence your cycling trip such as:

  • Duration of the trip: often being away a few days is equivalent to staying a month in terms of luggage, accessories and equipment to be equipped)
  • Season in which it is tackled: starting in July is not like leaving in September and the expected weather and expected temperatures must often be considered
  • From the type of experience (cycle paths, gravel dirt roads, mtb, group with flagship and support people)
  • From the places that you intend to travel and therefore from the type of "food and accommodation" to which you intend to resort (travel in full adventure or stops with restaurants and hotels on the way)

Cycling tips: how to prepare your luggage for a bike trip

Divide the compartments and use waterproof bags: The best solution is to divide similar items and close them in transparent nylon bags so that you can find them easily. If you use different colored bags the search will be easier.

Always load things the same way and group the objects you use together (such as mattress and sack or underwear); this is to avoid opening all the bags every time in search of what you need.

In the pockets or bags of the handlebar it is advisable to keep the accessories and objects that you need most frequently and even snacks. The front handlebar must still remain light in order not to unbalance the bike and consequently decrease the handling and sliding.
